This is a full-gas downhill race down a proper DH track. The ABOM descent is a classic track on the DH scene and has seen plenty of great racing over the years – and this event will add to that heritage.

We will be running the race in a traditional World Cup style with practice in the morning, followed by a seeding run and then a final run with the fastest down the track on the final run claiming the win. The chairlift will be operating and your entry fee includes your lift pass (for the day) so you don’t need to worry about shuttle buses and trailers.

The course:
The ABOM descent is one of Buller’s classics and has been raced for years and years… it’s an intermediate level, 2.2km descent that includes fast, open straights with sweeping corners, berms and plenty of doubles to boost. The descent finishes at the Northside Express chairlift mid-station and riders catch the chairlift back up after each descent.

Schedule (proposed, may be tweaked before race day):
8:00am – 8:30am Course open for walking inspection – no riding. Lift open for uplift.
8:30am – 11:00am Open practice on the course – all categories, setting off at your own time.
11:00am – 11:45pm Practice for Elite and Expert category riders only
12:15pm – 2:15pm (approx) Seeding Run
2:45pm (approx) Race runs commence

Safety aspects and coverage
We will step up many safety aspects for the Reckless ABOM DH in 2020 to further increase the wellbeing and protection of all riders. This includes:

  • Having an ambulance onsite during the event
  • Increased mandatory gear requirements for riders
  • More barrier tape to provide greater delineation between race course and spectator zones
  • More marshals along the length of the course
  • Additional paramedics, doctor and ski / bike patrollers onsite
